On December 1st, 2013 I was blessed because Mariane, one of my best friends, asked me to do the honor of being Godmother to her son Mason. Of course I joyously obliged, and said so, with all the most genuine excitement in my heart.
However, in all honesty, it wasn’t until his actual baptism on Sunday, January 12th, that what it truly means to be a Godmother, actually started settling in. Although I am an individual of intense faith and beliefs, I’m no longer a practicing Catholic, and I consider myself more spiritual than religious. Needless to say, hearing the priest speak about the responsibilities of a God parent, about leading this child toward God, and helping raise him in the Light of God, was somewhat heavy. As he spoke, a full range of thoughts raced through my mind; of all the memories I want to create with him, the lessons I want to teach, and the examples I want to set. It was then that I realized how interesting it was that I could care so much about a child, even if I don’t see him as often as I’d like to, and even if he’s not my own. Clearly, a lot of the answers and discoveries I attain, I attain at the actual moment of question, but I’m alright with that.
I still haven’t figured out exactly what it means to be a Godmother, and what types of responsibilities it brings, but I know I’m not afraid of it, and I’m looking forward to figuring it out along the way…especially because I hope to impart a very neutral form of belief, one that doesn’t discriminate. I also know that I’m so excited to be a part of his life, because Lord knows I loved him from the moment I saw him.
Sidenotes: if you’re wondering why I don’t have more photos with my Godson, and why I’m not holding him in any of them, it’s because I was getting over a cold/flu and didn’t want to get him sick. Also, thank you to my amazing boyfriend Zach for driving all the way down from SF to SD, just to be there with us for this special occasion. And lastly, I don’t know what the heck is up with my baby hairs in all these pictures.
I can’t even take credit for this adorable photo of Mason. Megan captured this one.
You already know i took a bunch with my phone…
